Sermon Notes: You Are Here

Colossians 1:21-23:

21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Paul spends six verses explaining the preeminence and reconciling work of Christ (1:15-20). Some theologians think this section of verses a hymn of the early church.

But, before he moves from the cosmic realities of the reconciling Christ, he gets personal.

And you…

When I go to the mall, I always find the directory for where stores are located. You’ll notice a large red circle that says: You Are Here.

Verses 21-23 of Colossians is Paul’s You Are Here statement.

You were alienated and without a home in Christ.

You once were enemies and hostile in your thinking toward God.

You once were doing evil deeds and forsaking your Creator and Redeemer.

But that was the past, the old you, and the old man/woman. You are not reconciled to Christ because of his work on the cross. Death happened for you to get life.

You Are Here.

Reconciled, another way of saying justified, and part of the family. No longer a stranger watching from the window. Not to mention, holy, blameless, and above reproach. Nothing can separate you from God any longer. You are clean, forgiven, and without blemish because of the blemish-free righteousness of Christ.

Only one condition. Don’t stray from the hope you have in the gospel. Christ is what you need, trust him. This gospel you heard, good news echoing in the universe, don’t stop listening to it.

The song of Jesus is still playing and inviting others to sing the chorus. of cosmic and personal reconciliation.

Nothing to earn, nothing to do, only to receive with a trusting heart, faith.

You Are Here.
